A link appears in an AI answer on Monday and disappears at the next check. A site owner changes the headline, adds a paragraph, and sees the link return. It is tempting to credit the edit. What is missing is an account of how the citation might have behaved without that change.

An Ahrefs study published October 29 followed roughly 37,500 citations across five AI tools for 20 days. In its sample, about 50% to 83% of day-one citations were absent the following day, depending on the tool. Some higher rates reflected answers that cited nobody. Those figures describe the study’s questions and observation window, not a forecast for an individual WordPress site.

Record the answer, including an unsuccessful check

For a small site, the useful response is to improve the observation before increasing the pace of editing. A missing source can mean that the answer cited other websites. It can mean that no sources were shown. A failed request may produce no comparable answer at all. Recording all three as a citation loss would blend different events into one number.

The illustration above shows a possible sequence: present, absent, present again. It is an original hypothetical diagram, not measured study data. It does not attribute a return to a page edit. The point is to make room for a sequence of observations instead of saving only the screenshot that looks like a win.

Choose a small set of useful questions and repeat them in the same language, on the same platform, with settings kept as consistent as practical. Record the prompt, time, whether an answer was successfully obtained, whether sources were shown, and whether your site appeared among them. Note an evident platform or model change rather than silently treating a changed environment as an uninterrupted comparison.

Keep the edit and the observation as separate events

Suppose an installation guide gains a missing step and returns as a cited source the next day. The step may be a worthwhile improvement for readers. That single return still cannot establish that the edit caused it. Keep a description of the change beside the observations and review what happens afterward.

This is not a reason to preserve obvious mistakes while waiting for more data. A broken download link, an incorrect version requirement or an inaccessible explanation deserves attention on its own merits. State the actual problem being repaired. Otherwise, a site can end up rewriting useful material repeatedly to chase a changing source list.

Google’s guidance on AI features also distinguishes eligibility from serving: meeting requirements and best practices does not guarantee crawling, indexing or display. That guidance concerns Google’s features. It cannot explain another platform’s source-selection decisions.

Use the record to decide what to investigate

If a decline persists, return to the page. Can it be accessed normally? Does it still answer the question being monitored? Did a redesign remove an important explanation? These are concrete maintenance questions. When the evidence does not identify a cause, keep the cause unknown instead of assigning it to a template, plugin or setting.

A citation is also a different event from a visit or a completed installation. Keep the observation of an answer separate from what the website records visitors doing. That distinction helps determine whether the next job is improving an explanation, repairing access, or making the download process easier to complete.

There is a practical cost to tracking. Checking too many loosely defined questions can consume the time needed to maintain the actual product documentation. Start with questions that represent a reader need you can serve, and retain enough context to understand each result later. A smaller consistent record is easier to interpret than a large folder of unrelated screenshots.

A useful weekly note can remain simple: which fixed questions showed the site, which checks failed, what changed on the pages, and which conclusions still lack evidence. The next week can then build on the same record instead of starting from another isolated success or disappearance.
